For those of you who haven't discovered tagging yet...it's a powerful method of getting more traffic to your blog if done right.

Approach tagging just as you do pinging.  Tag your new article everytime you post to your blog....just as you ping every time you post a new article to your blog.

Tagging...a form of "social bookmarking".... entails the use of informally assigned, user-defined keywords or tags associated with specific "articles" submitted to social bookmarking services.   Most social bookmarking services allow users to search for bookmarks which are associated with given "tags".  Most (or actually all) search engines will also list these "tag" pages in the search engine directories.

What you'll see is your articles come up in searches for specific tags associated with your article(s)....on a key word/phrase specific page or "Tag".  Much like key words and phrases but way more powerful.

What this will do for you is this:

-  create keyword specific "pages" listed in the search engines with your articles contained therein as a reference point

-  create back links to your blog which are key word specific

-  create back links to your blog from high PR relevant link partners (the social bookmarking service "tag" page).

-  raise your blog's PR through link strategy from highly targeted links and high PR link partners.

All in all it's a plus to your blog in many ways specific to SEO marketing.  Plus it will result in more targeted traffic to your blog.

TIP....tag specific articles/article pages within your blog.  You want content rich targeted key word pages.  This works better for PR and audience (traffic) targeting.

TIP....Do NOT use articles which read like adverts.  These will be deleted usually and could get you banned.  They won't go over well.  Instead...submit informational articles focusing on resources etc.  These will go over much better and draw real interested traffic from search engine and social network searches.  Remember...the personal links in your side bar menus will still be seen as the entire page is saved and shared as a "tag".

Here's an informative resource for more info on tagging:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking

Here's an example of some tagging services you can take advantage of (this isn't an all inclusive list so do look for more):

http://del.icio.us/

http://blogmarks.net/

http://jots.com/

http://furl.net/

http://de.lirio.us/rubric

http://www.blinklist.com/

The above is not meant to cover all the ins and outs of tagging...just to introduce you to the concept so you can look more into it yourself and apply it as appropriate.

For those who have done tagging..... please share your experiences, comments, insights, and resources in replies for the benefit of the rest of the Forum membership.

God Bless,
Michael

And here's where I say a big AH HAH! :)  Yes, Michael, the learning curve is still being climbed, but I think I'm getting closer each day.  It's truly obvious to anyone who cares to look, but I modeled quite a lot of my design from your blog as I loved the layout.

Still learning about the tags, but I think I'm on the right track with them!

Thanks, as always, for the great training.

Yours in Greater Success,
Merideth

Michael,

Quick question for you...  I have put in Technorati tags into all my blog posts, but I can't seem to make them any less visible (they're all underlined at the moment).  Having a bunch of underlined words really breaks up the flow of what I'm trying to say...any ideas?  Am I just missing the very simple 'underline' feature in blogger? :)

Thanks!
Yours in Greater Success,
Merideth

Merideth,

You should just put the technorati tag (ONE) at the bottom of your post rather than all through it.  You really don't need them all through your posts.  You don't need that many tags to have an impact with SEO and PR.  The idea is to have individual post pages get indexed....1 at a time.  Each creates a link for SEs and alos on a specific Technorati "Tag" page for that keyword/phrase/tag.  PLUS....the Technorati community of bloggers will find it searching for that Tag.

God Bless,

Michael

Perfect - thanks Michael.  Just to clarify, there is no way to make that tag invisible at the end of the post is there?  I just think some readers may find it odd to see a line across the bottom of each post that says technorati tag X Y or Z. :)

Merideth

I don't think so Merideth.  I wouldn't worry about your readers anyway.  "Links" at the bottom of a blog post are fairly common....especially for something like a Technorati tag.  Others have tags for "Digg This", "del.icio.us", del.irio.us", and others.  Plus "comments" and "track back" links are common too.

No biggie.

God Bless,

Michael

Michael,

Do the tags have to be specific words you use in your posts or can they relate to the tone of your article as well?

Thanks,
Yours in Greater Success,
Merideth

Either.  It's best to choose a tag which is either the focus of your article...or a major key word/phrase in your article.

For example...the tag could be MLM, lead generation, law of attraction, mlm leads, etc as a focus tag.  It could also be Remarkable Network Marketing (John Fogg's new book), Master Mind Sessions (John's audio training series), or John Fogg as a key word tag.

I generally use the focus approach.  Sometimes the Tag is both a focus and a key word.  For example on my Broadband Nation blog I posted a review about SunRocket VoIP service.  It was both a focus and keyword tag.

On my Best MLM Resoures blog I posted a review about Peak Impact Inc. leads company.  I used a focus tag "Peak Impact" and a key word tag "MLM leads".

You can also have multiple tags for a post...with something like blinklist, blogmarks, or del.icio.us....with tag services where mutliple tags are available for one post (they don't show on your site...you "register" the post individually each time and select your appropriate tags then).

God Bless,

Michael

Hi Michael..  I am new to "tagging" and I wanted to know the differece between public tags and private tags.  Private tags would be my own keywords right.  I'm not sure about the public tags though.  Also, what does "via" mean .  It's located below public tags.  Should my tags "match" the tags with my blog exactly"?  Any information would help.  Thanks.

Wes

Wes,

This may be an over simplification but I want to keep this basic rather than risk getting too detailed.  So.....

Public tags means anyone can see them and read what you're tagging.  Private tags means only a select audience you define can see and read them (such as a list you provide).

As for the "via".....I've no idea.  Never heard of it or maybe I'm just not sure what you're talking about.

You're tags should match the key words you're targeting within the post/document you're tagging.  For example if I'm tagging a post to my blog Best MLM Resources and the subject is lead generation I'll tag for key words lead generation, MLM leads, leads, etc.

Plus don't get confused on terms.  "Tagging" is simply "notifying" a social bookmark community (e.g. digg, simpy, de.licio.us) that you have something worth reading.  During the process of "tagging" you'll submit key words for the item you're "tagging".  In other words Tags and key words are related but not the same.  Tagging is the act of submission....similar to pinging blog directories when you post soemthing new to your blog.

God Bless,

Michael

In an old company i was with, I kept blogging everyday. I would use keywords to tag and in like 3 weeks i was hitting google and yahoo hard and heavy. I got 25 hits in one day, then people started calling me on the phone and it led to 4 sign ups in one weekend. It was pretty amazing,i learned the power of blogging.

The old company i was with no longer exists, so when i joined the new company on thursday, i started blogging and i have been adding to it everyday, using keywaord and tag words and giving it a ping,i know in a few weeks,it will become active

this is just one of the tools i use to build my business,it is fantastic!

Below is more great info on Tagging from my friend Derek Gehl.  Check it out....

God Bless,

Michael

================

Here is more additional info about tag and ping:

There are free online tools you can use to create your tags for you, such as the one at Keotag.com

Now, here's the kicker: the HTML code you use to create your tags is going to be different, depending on the search engine you want to "read" them. That's because tags work by actually linking your blog post straight to the search engine's index. (For example, if you go to Keotag.com, you'll see that you can make tags for Technorati, a popular blog community, or Flickr, the 'Net's largest photo blog community, or del.icio.us, a popular online bookmark site.)

Right now, the best place to link your blog tags is Technorati. In case you've never heard of it, Technorati is the Internet's most popular blog community. Currently, Technorati has over 45.3 million blogs in its index -- that's up from 24 million in January, which means it's grown a whopping 88% in just five short months!

And all these web pages are linked together via more than 2.5 billion Technorati tags that allow people to surf from one linked blog to another, or to find blogs related to certain topics by using Technorati's search engine.

Tagging in Technorati is easy. All you have to do is follow these three simple steps:

Create your own free account with Technorati.

Go to your Account page on the Technorati site and "claim" your blog (in other words, register it) under the "Your Blogs" header.

Include Technorati tags in your posts by inserting an HTML link at the bottom of each post. The tag should look like this:

][tagname]

All you have to do is copy the above bit of HTML and add your own "tagname" to it. The tagname is the word or label you want to use for your tag. For example, if I wanted to create a tag for "Derek Gehl," it would look like this:

][Derek]

Once you've created a new HTML snippet for each of your tags, using a different tagname for each one, you're done! Your blog post should now be indexed with Technorati, so you can take advantage of their HUGE community of blog readers.

God Bless,
Michael
