I've used Adwords on and off for many years. I had minimal success at best and then I read the e-book Day Job Killer and it made a big difference in my approach. First of all, it made me really focus on high CTR's which makes you think hard about keywords.
A couple of rules he stated that are simple and sorta "duh" but I was violating them time and time again:
1. If you are selling a "work at home" product then put "work at home" in the title
2. Furthermore, you should NEVER have a keyword that doesn't contain "work at home" in it - i.e. "work at home entrepeneur" NOT "entrepeneur"
3. Like Perry Marshall, he suggests (and I agree) that the landing page should have your keywords in the title. Again, the title should say something about "work at home" which will drive up sales or lead conversion because they landed on a page they were expecting
4. Test, test test. Always split test two ads against each other and try to beat yourself. Try shorter ads, extreme ads, ads with numbers, etc.
That's just a few of his tips but it is far worth the read because I think it is sort of a Perry Marshall for dummies version. And, since it helped me more than Perry's book I guess I'm categorizing myself :-)

3 Tips for Google Adwords for you
Getting winning results with google adwords is the question that many pay per click advertising are wanting to know. There are many guides out there that teach people how they can achieve winning results with google adwords, and I have read many of them. What I would like to do is just share with you in this brief article is a few of my top favorite ways to get winning results with google adwords.
Target the right audience – This is the first tip that I want to share with you about getting winning results with google adwords is targeting the right audience. Many people who start with pay per click advertising on google are not targeting the right people. Ask yourself the question; what is my targeted audience? If you are marketing a home business opportunity you may be like most people and say home business opportunity seekers. I want to say you are not being specific enough with that. You need to ask what kind of home business seeker. Are you looking for direct sales and top tier program business opportunity seekers? Are you looking for liquid nutrition home business opportunity seekers? You need to know exactly what kind of business opportunity seeker if you want to get winning results with google adwords.
Tightly knit keyword groups – Now that you have found your targeted audience you need to group your keywords. You want to target a specific group with your keywords now. If you pick liquid nutrition home business opportunity seekers for example, then you will have several little groups for that audience. What are different things these people are looking for? Maybe they are researching other liquid nutrition companies to find the best one. You can target other companies as keywords. Then for each company you will find several keywords people are using to search that company. That will be a keyword group. Then do that until you have several tightly knit keyword groups.
Put keyword in the headline – The reason mainly why we wanted to create a tightly knit keyword group is for the keyword we put in the headline of the ad. If someone types in the keyword into Google you want them to notice your Ad. You can make your Ad stand out more if you have that keyword show up in the headline of your Ad. So if you are targeting people looking for a specific liquid nutrition company, you will want to create a keyword group for that company, then put that company name in the headline for your google adword.

Hey guys i have a weird questions. what if i was to put an adsense link on my blog and just had a freind go and click a few of the ads a hundred times a day and made me like 50 bucks a day all week long? I just explained it from my perspective instead of the other way around. Is there a protection feature against this?

You would probably get banned from advertising with Google
for Click Fraud. This sort of thing used to be a big problem
with Adsense.
Since then Google has developed Algorhythms that help
them spot this sort of behavior. In fact you can get in trouble
for clicking on your own ads only a few times... they will shut
you down and you will have to grovel to get reinstated.

| Yes the advertiser would not be charged the money because Google will be able to tell that all those clicks came from the same IP address.

I was recently pitched on a system called "get google ads free" which claims to show you a way ("secret method") to get top spots on keyword searches for free. Great sales page, etc. but I can't imagine this is legit and not pure hype - I would think Google would cut this type of thing off at the pass. Does anyone have any input on this "system"??
Thanks in advance...
Blessings...

Generally I would say yes. Google is all about making sure your ads are relevant. In my opinion and what has worked better for me is to have fewer keywords that are tightly grouped together. Your landing page or the site you are sending people to from your ad better be using the same keywords as you have in your ad or it will cost you a lot more per click.

This is great information. The key to google is relevance. Your keywords better be closely tied to your ad and your ad better be closely tied to the page you are sending people to from your ad. Google checks this and is part of what determines your cost per click. Don’t create an ad group with hundreds of random keywords and expect to get a good rating with google. Pick a group of tightly grouped keywords make sure those keywords are in your ad and make sure the keywords are in your title of your landing page or at least in the first paragraph of your page.

I would have to agree... too many keywords could bring a lot of wasted clicks, costing you $$$. That takes the fun out of an otherwise AWESOME marketing avenue.
Efficiency is key on Google... and split testing is a super easy way to get there.
Some ads that I run have only one keyword, especially when I am testing.
Try it and see what happens. The nice thing about Google is that you can have as many ad variations as you want.
Let me know if I can help...
Best Wishes,
Nate

I usually run a number of key words, then look at impression vs. click through percentages.
Then, I eliminate the ones with less click through, and put the $ I was spending on those towards either a higher budget, or higher cost per click on the keywords that had the highest click through.
I do it the opposite of the other person---I start with a bunch, then when I see what is effective, I cut it back to only a couple.

This is from Perry Marshall....Google Adwords expert...and thought I'd share it for those interested here. I edited out the obvious "advertising" stuff. So if you want to know more about Perry...and his services...I suggest looking him up at Google.
====================
What does Google want from its advertisers?
The cynics in the crowd will say, "OUR MONEY!!!" ...but that ain't necessarily the case. As anyone who's had Quality Score problems will know.
Google wants much more than that. If that was all they were after.... they wouldn't have any. It's their willingness to walk away that makes them successful. (And there's a lesson in that, too.)
Today, some clues to the difference between what is merely good and what is great.
-First of all, Google wants ads that get clicked on. If nobody clicks on your ad, they don't get paid for the click. That's why your ad position is not just determined by bid price but by the Click Thru Rate. I've seen CTR's lower than 0.1% for search traffic and CTR's upwards of 30%. The difference between a bad ad and a good one is gigantic.
-Google rewards and prefers stability and longevity. When you first open a brand new Google account, every assumption they make is *not* in your favor. Before the very first click comes - while they're still taking all the risk for you - they're going to assume you don't know how to write good ads, that people who come to your website will probably leave right away, that you're incompetent.
You pay the highest click prices in the beginning.
But.... if you establish a good click thru rate and users don't hit the "back" button once they hit your site, the Big G starts breathing a sigh of relief and gives you more breathing room of your own. I've been observing for years now that good advertisers' click costs tend to stay level. I've even seen, lately, some going down instead of up. Just last night I talked to one of my Roundtable members, who's competing with hundreds of advertisers, and in the last year he's seen his click costs slowly drop from $2 a click to under a buck.
I think some of that is his market but some of it is also the trust he's earned from the search engine. His websites are quality, his ad campaigns are properly constructed, and he's got an automatic advantage over the New Kid In Town. At least until New Kid In Town proves himself.
-I know another guy in an equally competitive niche who started out paying $11 per click but after a few days dropped down to about $2. Once again, it's that trust and stability Google was looking for.
-Google likes to see a low "bounce rate." That's the number of people who click to your site and immediately bail. Google Analytics (which will be covered in detail during the upcoming Bobsled Run, starts September 25) reports this for you as a percentage.
-Ideally Google would like to see those people click on your ad, disappear into your site and never be seen again. Hopefully because your visitors are so deliriously happy and involved in what you are doing that they don't want to search again. THAT is your mission, should you choose to accept it.
-Ads that consistently have a high ranking and high CTR will begin to show up on the premium space across the top of the search results, instead of running down the right side.
What you most need to know is that the "real money" in your website is all about what happens after the first click - and after that - and after that - and after that. What that person does over a long period of time. That's where the real wizardry is. I can assure you, there's a ton of money you're leaving on the table right now. But it can be yours.
=================
God Bless,
Michael
