Hi, I've been toying with the idea of using Adwords for my website(s) and was wondering what experience others have had with this? Is the program worth the cost, and what's the average turnover for you? I have several freebie sites and was wondering if it would be worthwhile paying for traffic for these...any and all advice would be very much appreciated!

I personally haven't gone down the adwords path yet, but have talked to people about it. This is the advice they gave to me:
When considering adwords, you need two key pieces of information:
1 - How much is an action worth to you? (buying product, signing up for your ____, ....)
2 - What is your conversion of visitors to desired action?
Say an action is worth $10, and your conversion is 10%. Then the most you would want to pay for a visitor is $1. Say using adwords you can get a visitor by spending $0.75, then for every adword dollar you spend, your revenue gain is $0.33. Spending $1,000 on adwords will give you $333. If you can keep these ratios inline then you want to spend as much as possible on effective adwords.
But at the end of the day, just try it and measure it's affectiveness. What works great for someone doesn't at all for someone else. and visa-versa.

Thanks oprius,
This information is greatly appreciated. It seems if you are not willing to track percentages and ratios, then it would be best to look at other ways to market.
Have you successfully used any other marketing techinques?

In any marketing you do, you should be measuring it. You only have so many marketing dollars to spend, and you need to know your money is well spent.
I'm not saying you need a full blown analytical statistical analysis of ratios and total cost of ad placement blah blah blah (although if you can, great). However, you do need to know if something is working or not to know if your money is well spent.
At Oprius we are using a lot of direct calling. Our contact manager [shameless promotion] which you should check out [/shameless promotion] is targeted towards home business owners. So we find the most affective approach is calling organizations that have connections to a lot of home business owners and having them pass the word along. We are also starting to branch into print ads, but are including a tracking code to measure its affectiveness.
Hope that helps,

Success with AdWords, from a financial point of view, really depends on what industry you are in. I come from the Web hosting industry, where keywords on AdWords are just too expensive unless you are able to spend several thousands of dollars a day. However, some industries, such as auto accessories and crafts, do not face this problem - keywords are still very affordable.
So it really does depend on the industry you are in.

I've never paid for Adwords (or any form of advertising for that matter), but I have heard several people comment on how much money they lost because they obviously didn't know what they were doing.
If you are going to try it, I'd suggest trying it on a very small scale to begin with. Don't spend more than you can stand to lose if you failed to make any sales.
Also, read, read, read, to find out the best tips on how to run a successful campaign.
I just didn't really want to spend the time or money to run a paid ad campaign yet. I'm considering it for my newest site, but it's down the road a bit yet.
I've spent the majority of my time building keyword focused content pages. I've found that it seems to bring me in free targeted traffic through the search engines, so it is my best return on time invested.

| A small scale does sound like a good idea but I can tell you first hand I tried that way too and it didnt turn over what I was even close to expecting when I started. I put a good bit of time into trying to make it work and no such luck, so then I ended up going and purchasing an ad instead and that turned over well more.

I have to aggree, your budget can very quickly get gobbled up if you dont't research your key words carefully, you also need to be monitoring your campains very closely, and always split test your adds for optimum results.

I've played around with AdWords quite a bit. It can be scary stuff. Money can get sucked out pretty quickly with nothing to show for it, even when your cost per click is relatively low. You definitely need to know why you're paying for visits to your site and what the return you want is. Then you have to watch extremely closely and be ready to pull the plug right away.
You also need to get a bit of training in some way before you jump in.
I myself have sworn off it for now. The SEO game may not be any easier, but at least I can keep the costs under control.

Amen, Dave701. I'm a recovering PPC addict. I won't say that I'll NEVER to PPC again... but not for a very long time... especially now that I know there are so many better ways to advertise your site and get traffic from people that have searched Google for what my sites are about and that my sites are ranked in the top 10 to 30. It only gets better with time!

Sounds like you're doing good work with your sites, Lana. I'm so much happier now that I'm going for rankings. It does take time, but with persistence -- and quality content -- you will start to break through.
I love the phrase "recovering PPC addict." There is something truly intoxicating about getting all those clicks. But then you wake up in the morning with a big headache in your bank account!
Best,
Dave

AdWords can definitely work very well, but it generally takes a lot of tweaking and testing of your ads for them turn a healthy profit.
The important thing is to make sure you work hard on getting organic traffic. Quality content...and lots of it. And work on getting backlinks too. Very important. The payoff is well worth it.
Shine on,
Aar n
