I would also add one more to that list, and it does not always apply, but often does apply; do not be quick to use the sample templates that come with your webhosting package, it makes you look elementary and that can say something about your character.  I think you are much better off keeping the website simple, pick a comfortable background color, and build the website on that.  Just my opinion.

Thank you for the information. It is very useful.

I especially like number 11 whick speaks about updating our site on a regular basis. It is very easy to approach your internet business with marketing being the main focus of our efforts.

Although this is the most important concept to be successful, we need to be sure that our site is attractive to search engines and our potential customers.

New and fresh content is the key.

Thanks again fir the great tips.

John

csmith,

That's not necessarily a bad thing...as long as it's a clean, easily navigated, and appealing "look".   Something easy for a visitor to "see" and understand (including understanding what you're motivating them to do...click on something).

It is a bad thing if the content is all too similar...from a SEO aspect.  SEs don't like same/similar content and will penalize you in there rankings for that.  Especially Google.

God Bless,
Michael

Number 5 cross browser compatibility isn't that much of a concern - 70% of the internet users use IE. Unless you download and install the other browsers, you're not going to know how your site looks on the other browsers.

True. My host suggested I use Firefox to improve compatibility across browsers. I'm such a die hard IE user that I have resisted so far.

FireFox is by far the best Web-Browser out right now. Although I love OPERA the Best, many sites aren't fully compatible with Opera. I suggest downloading FireFox!
IE is by far the biggest piece of ..... you get the picture, time to upgrade my friend!

Nice, this seems like very useful stuff...of course I don't think this is really a one size fits all type deal, but, it works...

Great post, although I do think some flash can add to the overall look of a website. Also, I have been a Mozilla Firefox user for 2 years now, and I HIGHLY recommend it over Explorer. A lot less errors and crashes.

Sounds like all the no no's I used to put in my websites.  especially graphics for text and the huge flash intros.  Thanks for the great info.  knowing a little about cascading style sheets and search engine optimization is very helpfull too.

Nice one michael, good tips and sound advice. There are so many sites out there that really rip the eyes out the sockets with colours and busy backgrounds. Those that take a few hours to load too are a pain too.

Hi,

Yep. Michael's nailed a lot of the 'biggies' there. Another problem with overdoing the flash and graphic side is that it seriously slows the pageloading time, and some of your visitors just won't hang around.

I have particularly benefitted from Ken Evoy's 'SiteBuildIt!' - from the Sitesell site - because it's so good for 'mistake prevention'. It includes the functionality of telling you exactly how often you should include your keyword for that page so that you attract the 'spiders' as a true source of relevant content rather than a spammer who's keyword-stuffing a worthless page of waffle.

Content is always king. No amount of colour and style will compensate for poor content. And with an mlm site especially - give as much free value and content as you can. The days of ramming opportunities down people's throats are over - thankfully. MLM is a noble cause - however often it's abused - and your website may well lead eventually to someone solving major financial problems in their life. If we can do that for someone - our own financial rewards are just the icing on the cake.

Fight the good fight!

Alun

Very informative ideas on how to construct a website well. This could serve as a checklist for the next site I plan to build.

Multiple page websites should have the same style and format.  You do not want visitors think that they are visiting a different site when clicking on internal links.

Which brings up another point, always "brand" your website.  Put something, a name, a graphic, a logo on the site that can be easily remembered.  This sort of branding makes your site memorable.

God Bless,
Michael

The cool thing is that those 11 mistakes can be changed so easily and quickly.

Split testing has been the solution for me, as long as I can keep getting better results by changing something simple I will do it.

My pages have never been flashy, my split testing results show that they take away from the readers focus on the page content and what I want the final outcome to be.

Keep your pages simple and to the point, never stop split testing and you will get higher and higher converting pages.

I like the ideas about the flash page loading.  I noticed that our viewers are getting a shorter and shorter attention span, so on a regular basis you need to be testing and maximizing the space on your website correctly.  Make it simple, so the viewer can enjoy it... Psychologically they will appreciate it more too!!!
