I did a big post card mail out but something went wrong I got a great list of people searched the demographics and bought a list. I knew this was going to be a long term advertisement media for me so I got myself a bulk mail permit. Then I ordered the best post cards I could find researched the net for content to stimulate me to be able to come up with a great post card.
I have the site up and the url on the card I even did a test mailing to 250 old leads I bought in the day and got some response so now I was ready to send out 1000 of these bad boys.
So what went wrong?
Well now I know more and looking at the postcards I can see some mistakes.
1) I didn’t have a phone # on the card only the web page. ( people are more likely to make a call on an offline marketing piece then to go online and look you up)
2) The post card did ok with the old list because my content was geared to the masses but this didn’t work well on the targeted leads I bought. I needed to tweak the card for the client I was mailing
3) I should have don a test with the leads I bought that I was going to do the big mailing with.
If you have had success with Post cards what other tips do you have.
which professions out there do you think respond the best to home base business mailings

Hey there,
Here is what I would say about postcard marketing to give you a very broad perspective on this form of marketing:
1. As you already realize, it can be a very expensive proposition (even more so if not done properly) which means that it is not the most effective advertising method if you are working with a tight budget.
2. You must be prepared to send out a minimum of 5,000 postcards just a test to monitor and track the results before you launch your actual campaign. This allows you to get solid feedback to tweak and adjust the next batch that go out.
3. Due to the cost of such a campaign you must carefully monitor the costs and the actual results of the campaign ( I suggest going with a capture page/ squeeze page instead of a phone number on the cards) as most people are more willing to check out a site than to call as they don't want to be confronted with a salesperson. The alternative to this is and 800# that will capture the callers telephone number so you can give them a courtesy call back regardless if they leave their info.
4. If you cannot at his time afford to do the above, postcard marketing may not be as profitable for you and other less expensive forms of marketing may be more ideal right now (i.e. ezines, article marketing, blogs, classifieds, etc.) until you can raise the capital to launch an effective postcard campaign.
This isn't to say that you cannot have success with 1000 postcard campaign but unless you have tracked ad tested the effectiveness of the media oftentimes your ROI will not justify a campaign of this magnitude.

IMHO, I have found that massive advertising in the mail is becoming much like SPAM. I get so much snail mal these days, that I normally stop at the trash can and dump advertising right into the trash.
It would take some really Exceptional powerful post card to get my attention. SO far I've not seen one that would qualify.
I think you'd also have to do at least 5-10K to et a good idea of responses and that could be pricey.
That's my 2 cents for what it's worth

Post cards can are expensive but as far as not working I think the list you send them to matters.
If you send them to people that may be interested in what you have you should get a good response?

I tried post cards with my old company and never really got a good response. Maybe it was because of the list.
What I did get a good response from was personalized letters. Now I did them with a mail merge program, but they were personalized non the less.

I think the right market would be people who are genuinely interested in the product or service you are providing.
Right?

You can buy list of people in professions that would be interested in your products.
many companies will even break the demographics down to race, age, income, home size, even if they have a pet.
you can try us data corp or american heritage. from all the great info in this thread i am quit sure the list you send the cards to is just if not more important than the card.
some say it is best to buy a list of people that have opted in to find out more about home base busiensses.
what do you think?
