You hear lots of discussion everyday about the personal "failure rate" in Network Marketing or MLM. It's a pretty popular subject for forum discussions. There's plenty of sad stories passed around. Note: some stories are definitely legit, don't get me wrong here. But often there's "more to the story" as Paul Harvey would say.
Folks complain about their "lack" of results (notice I said "their" lack), blame everything but themselves (usually), constantly search for "the" way to turn things around (e.g. "the right system"), and/or routinely jump to the next "thing" because the last "thing" didn't work.
Now hold on their Cowboy (errrr....Cowgirl too).
"You" need to step back....breath deep....and take another look.
I believe there are some who are cut out to be their own boss and some who are not. We come across people everyday looking into home-base businesses and Network Marketing. But unfortunately many don't really know if they have what it takes. Too often they're coming from the "give my boss 40 hrs/wk, collect a paycheck" mentality. That just doesn't work in MLM.
Before they get started into business for themselves (and you get started as their mentor), there's a simple test called the “Self-Employment Test” specifically designed to measure your prospects for success. This is the perfect self examination to get people thinking about "working for themselves".
Take The Self Employment Test.....
http://snipurl.com/1pqre
The test is from the book, “Is Self-Employment for You? by Paul Casey (you can get it at Amazon.com if interested). This book goes beyond the ABC’s of how to write a business plan but examines the potential entrepreneur’s emotional readiness and personality traits that ultimately make the difference between success and failure.
This test is very simple. Read the questions and assign yourself a number between 1 and 5, where 1 is the lowest score, and 5 is the highest. For example, in the first question, "Are you a leader?" A score of 1 means, "I have absolutely no leadership skills whatsoever. My dog doesn’t even follow me on walks." A score of 5 means, "I am an experienced leader in every sense of the word. If not for my dream of starting my own business, I would be running for president."
As Paul says....you need to be completely honest with yourself on this test! Do not make yourself out to be more or less than you really are. Again, this test will help you to determine your prospects for success, but only if you are honest in assessing your own strengths and weaknesses.
Anyway don't despair if you don't score well it just means you may have a few things to work on. If you're willing to that is.
God Bless,
Michael

Great article Michael. I wrote one myself a few weeks ago about understanding the importance of knowing whether you are an internet worker or an internet marketer.
Some people just want to work at home and do not even want an internet business of any kind, whether it be network marketing, affiliate marketing, or whatever.
Some people are not really cut out to be self employed and you are right others just need to work on themselves to be better at being self employed.

| It is so true that not everyone is cut out for MLM. It would be so helpful to remember this when recruiting. Rather than trying to change a person's mind about MLM, we are better off talking to those who are already interested.

The problem is you never truly know upfront who is going to be successful in MLM. People that said all the right things and were ultra talented, never really got going, while others that I seriously doubted if this business was right for them, turned out to be superstars. I finally come to the conclusion that it is not up to us to play God and decide who this business is appropriate for. We merely present the opportunity in a clear, factual manner and let each person decide for themselves if this business is right for them.

Agreed.
MLM may not be suitable for everyone. If it is, then any Tom, Dick and Harry can be successful in this business.
Out of every 100 people who try MLM, 95 of them are going to fail, because this business just doesn't fit the failures.
Maybe this is the law of the universe - there must be people who are destined to work for somebody else for the rest of their lives.
To the top,
Wyatt

| Really good topic. Unfortunately, most people that sign up for this type of opportunity is signing up under a great deal of hype and then later realize that it is just not that easy.

I have been 'self employed' or working for myself for the last 4-5 years and I love it! There are some pro's and con's and one of the biggest con for me is the fact that I work online without physically meeting people.
The pro's definitely outweigh the con's and by being your own boss you dont have to answer to anyone, you dont get told off if you make a mistake, you can work when you want and as hard as you want.
One thing I have noticed about myself is then before I became self employed, I used to say 'when I earn an extra £1000 per month I wont have to work as hard any more' I thought I could relax a little more. Well, Im a lot over an extra £1000 per month now but I work 3 times as hard as I did before! The more I earn, the harder I work :-)
Many people come online for an easy ride, and to earn money instantly but unfortunately its not the reality. In order to make money online takes a lot of skill, dedication, hard work and knowledge and getting all that takes time!
Its my goal and aim to help others achieve an income online, and I do my best but unfortunately I cant help everyone who comes to me as they dont have the right mental attitude.

Hi guys hope you don't mind me adding my 2 cents worth here. I believe that MLM can be for everyone. Why? MLM is nothing but a business model. Anyway who wants to can start a business. For example : A newbie comes into the business, tries, fails and leaves. We then classify them as not suitable right? Personally I don't think so. What if the newbie goes into another MLM company, has a great mentor and succeeds this time. Can we still say that he is not suitable? I highly doubt so.

Take a moment to think about some of
the greatest business owners of our time.
Bill Gates
John Chambers
Donald Trump
Oprah Winfrey
Robert Kiyosaki
This prominent list could go on for quite some time. What do these leaders have in common?
They've all worked their tails off to obtain the successes they've accomplished. They're all extremely driven. Putting in long days and countless hours is a daily routine for them. They never stop.
There's also another item that can't be overlooked when discussing leaders and driven inspirations.
They all have a "WHY".
They all have something that motivates them to no end. Something that keeps them going. Day after day. It has nothing to do with the creation of wealth.
What keeps you going?
Is it your children and providing them with a better future?
Are you passionate about your products and services?
Maybe you have grandchildren. Regardless of what makes you 'tick', you must have a strong reason 'why'. You'll have good days and bad ones.
It's your 'why' that will give you the strength to pull through those rough days.
Ultimately, the success of the wealthy (and yours too) boils down to 2 critical things:
1. They're persistent and don't give up. Nothing stops them. Whether it's things taking place in their personal life, financial woes, personal and financial loss, etc. It makes no difference. They continue to persevere and bounce back like a yo-yo. Are you persistent? Do you easily give up and call it quits after a set back?
2. They understand the relevance of helping others. They thoroughly comprehend "The Law Of Success". The more they give back and help others they more they will receive in return.
It's crazy how it works, but it's the absolute truth. They know that their success, in large part, boils down to one simple question, "How many other lives have they changed?"
Are you positively having an impact on other people? Do you reach and go out of your way to assist others in their aspirations and dreams? Ultimately, success is defined by how you responded to those 2 prior questions.
Growing a business takes a tremendous amount of "doing". NOT, thinking about "doing".
Traveling this journey with you...

Am I really cut out for MLM? Hmmmmmmm...
Well, not traditional (old school) MLM anyway. Not home presentations and brochures and cd's and viewing everyone I come across as a prospect...I'm not cut out for that type of MLM, that's for sure.
I'm better at the know, like and trust (relationships) type of networking. I don't like to be sold and I don't like to sell.
I'm very blessed to be working with a very successful nwm professional who feels the exact same way because the fact is there are more of "ME" out there than there are of the rare individuals who can do it old school...and, after all, duplication is the key.

Hi MLM mentor, i certainly agree with you on this. Duplication is the key. the hardest thing for a newbie is to duplicate but the even harder thing for the upline is to teach. He may be the best mlm person in the company but if he can't teach he can't do much right?

InternetEnterprise,
Yes, I agree with you about teaching.
Now who would enter NWM without a burning desire to connect with people and create life long relationships and teach everything they've learned to their team? Perhaps that would be someone who was never taught that in the first place!

Hi! I've never posted here before...I actually just found this message board yesterday & there is a lot of great info here!
I'm hoping even though I'm new & have yet to contribute anything of value to this board, I can get some feedback from some of the members here.
I'd love to know:
What's your biggest frustration right now with your business?
What worries you the most about your business?
What information are you LOOKING for right now to help your business?
The reason I'm asking is this: Over the past 2 years, I've built a large organization using all offline methods. The 'system' I've created works very well for my team & it's something I have yet to see done anywhere else. I'm in the process of putting some info about it online, but I'd like to hear from YOU about what it is that YOU'RE looking for & struggles you're having right now.
Thanks so much for any help!

Hi Rachel,
Welcome to the MLMforum.
I'm curious to learn more about about your offline methods, do you mean meetings and 1 on 1's?
To answer your questions:

What worries you the most about your business? Ans: ?
What information are you LOOKING for right now to help your business? Ans: Creating momentum and duplication.

lol - me neither, although I love doing presentations, there are ways that are far more duplicatable than the 'old school' methods.... I will never again make a list of the 100 people I know!
I'll go flip burgers rather than do that.

MLM and Network Marketing sometimes gets real criticism. It’s an industry that is surrounded by lots of hype and empty promises. And people tend not to see the real benefits of MLM. Is a Network Marketing business hard work? Absolutely. Is it worth it? Yes, it is. Can it change your life? Yes, it will. Can you do it? Yes, you can.
Let’s take a look at some of the Benefits of MLM. Which of these appeals to you?
Business related activities are tax deductible.
Be there for your children.
Earn extra income.
Spend more quality time with your children.
Make new friends.
Set your own schedule.
Get great products at a discount.
Develop leadership skills.
Work with positive people – champions who have desire, drive and ambition.
Pay for your child’s college education with ease.
Have low overhead.
Work with whom you choose.
Enjoy ongoing personal growth and development.
Everyone who joins MLM has the same opportunity to create success. It’s up to YOU.
Earn while you learn.

In the startup software industry, there are some people that just keep starting startups even when the last ones failed. Eventually they get it right. What caused them to get it right? Experience. They get experience and knowledge that lets them succeed. I think the same applies to network marketing and starting a network marketing business.
I've been doing startup businesses since I was 16 and I don't think I've gone longer than six months without having some sort of side business I was working on. At this point starting a new business is easy and isn't scary at all. I'm getting better and better at starting new businesses and everything associated with it but really, I think it's a mentality and a mindset of never failing and always believing that you control your own destiny.

Great Article.....
I has this question going on in my head for years. I have always been Self-Employed and in business for my self of some sort.
I tried many different MLM programmes over a period of 14 years or so, I was successful in a few of them and seemed to get no results in the others.
What i found was after all these experiences and journeys, i decided that MLM was not for me.......it seemed to work really well for some of my close friends but not for me.
I suppose it was the lifestyle i was chasing and MLM was the wrong vehicle for ME, i shout that aloud because i believe everyone should find something they feel happy doing and that 'fits' with them, and resonates with their own heart.
I still enjoy working from home and have found other avenues to reach that Dream Lifestyle!

What an awesome post! It inspires me! You illustrate a truth that we in MLM have either ignored or just not wanted to give any crediblity to, for years. Yet, the truth is, shock, gasp, exclaim it out loud, MLM is NOT for everyone. In fact, truth be known, I believe it is only for a select few. Now that select status has nothing to do with station in life, with personal merit, none of that. It has to do with one's inner makeup and drive and whether or not one has a powerful enough reason why! This business is simple, incredibly simple but it is not easy. It is very hard. It demands a lot of you.
Most people in this world, including friends and family, in fact ESPECIALLY friends and family will not understand you. They will think you're nuts! They will tell you to get a REAL JOB. But you don't want a real job, you've had it up to your eyballs with working a real J.O.B.! You have drive, initiative, desire, an all consuming burning in your gut NEED to succeed. You want to be free of the Rat Race, you want to be in control of your life and your financial security, and here's a really big one, you aren't afraid to take a risk, or if you are afraid, you don't let your fear of risk override your desire to succeed! People will just think you have lost your mind. MLM doesn't work. MLM is a pyramid scheme. MLM is not a true business model. I've heard them all and then some.
But you will succeed. You will because you BELIEVE. You will because you are not afraid of the risk. You will because your "why" is so strong, so deeply rooted, so powerful that it compels you to forge ahead when all the odds are stacked against you, when people are against you, when finances are against you, when circumstances are against you, when you're dog tired and weary of the struggle, but the thought of giving up causes you to feel more pain than the pain of continuing on. You will succeed because failure is NOT AN OPTION and you have No Plan B!
I am not posting this to come down on you, Gugi Dhadli, in fact just the opposite is true, I commend you! In your quote above, you admitted this business was just not for you. You were in it for the wrong reason, the wrong "why." You were chasing a lifestyle, not persuing a deeply seated, ingrained all consuming dream. Big difference, and you did the right thing. MLM simply was not for you. There's no defeat in that. There's nothing wrong with that, because MLM is NOT for everyone, just like everyone is not cut out to be a lawyer or a doctor or a pro football player. Those professions require a certain kind of skill set, mind set, inner drive, all of that, as does MLM. What an awesome post! Thank you.
Mitch

That is so true.
I think that all new or even experienced network marketers feel like they are not cut for mlm. However if you truly have the drive and determination for it, you will succeed.
