I saw this amazing article in one of the well known article directories, just today. The article wasn't particularly well written, it had a few spelling errors and some gramatical flaws. It didn't even do a particularly good job of developing the idea beyond it's basic premise, but the message contained in that basic premise was powerful.

The message was this. People allow themselves to be defined by things other than who they are. They allow themselves to be defined by what other people think, by circumstances, by many things beyond their control. Or they allow themselves to be defined by their achievements, by how much money they make or how successful they are.

None of these things in truth, define us. In fact, not only do they not make us who we are, most of them are the result of who we are. No, we cannot control what people think, or outside circumstances that are forced upon us, but we can control how we respond to those things. At this point I would like to stop and ask a simple question, open for reflection and hopefully some response from you, my peers. What defines you?

Or, in the words of a philosophy professor I had back in my college days, can you tell me who you are without telling me what you are? I warn you, this is no easy task and it will mess with your head a little. However, I believe the exercise to be of tremendous value to us in lilfe, business, relationships, every walk of life, for that matter. You don't have to answer in personal detail if you don't want to. Be more general and answer in the third person, if you would prefer. If you feel uncomfortable sharing your thoughts, just doing the exercise will be good for you, I assure you.

However, I would be interested in knowing how people feel about this question. In fact, feelilngs will probably come closer to the truth than a more pragmatic analytical approach. And, I believe we will all benefit from sharing our thoughts with each other. So, tell me, if you can. What defines you?
